Review: Tera-Mai Reiki with Dorothy Winter

Continuing with my review of the wellbeing services I use in Tunbridge Wells, this week I’m looking at Dorothy Winter’s Tera-Mai reiki (full disclosure: Dot is my sister!)

What it is

Tera-Mai is a profound energy that balances the body and mind.It helps to reduce stress, aid relaxation and support the body to heal itself. Tera-Mai is a form of reiki – “Reiki” (ray-key) is Japanese for ‘universal life energy’. It is an ancient, non-invasive, hands-on healing technique that balances the body and mind. It helps to reduce stress, aid relaxation and support the body to heal itself.

A reiki treatment typically lasts 1hr-1.5hrs. The client remains fully clothed, and covered with a blanket. The practitioner will then begin a treatment by placing hands on or above the body where Reiki is channelled.

Reiki treatment is a process that anyone can enjoy but it is also useful to help aid recovery.

During a treatment the client may experience feelings and sensations depending on their needs at the time. Everyone is different, and some clients may feel nothing at all. Some people feel sensations of heat, tingling, or experience seeing colours, whilst others can have an emotional response, indicating that shifts are taking place, and balance is being restored.

Why I went

I go to reiki when I need to relax and also when I have an inner sense that something is bothering me but I’m not sure what. I have also been when I’ve had a migraine and not been able to get an acupuncture appointment.

Location

Dot is based out of her home in Southbrough near the junction with Yew Tree Road. The session is in a private room, on a comfortable bed and in the colder months, under a lovely fluffy blanket . On street parking is available outside and nearby.

Treatment

Dot completes an initial assessment of your overall wellbeing and any issues you might be having at the time. Then you lie down on the treatment bed usually covered with that cosy fluffy blanket; your body temperature can drop as you relax so this is to keep you warm. You stay fully clothed throughout. Calm music is playing and candles and incense are lit.

You keep your eyes closed throughout so I’m not sure exactly what it is that Dot does as part of the treatment – that’s her secret! Reiki is a non touching energy healing, so she rarely puts her hands on you. She may hold the back of your head for a while, and sometimes you may sense her hands moving over you, as she works her magic, but really you don’t physically feel anything at all. You’ll feel incredibly relaxed, and may even fall asleep. Your tummy might gurgle, but that is just it relaxing too.

Practitioner

I can’t say too much as Dot is my sister but suffice to say that she is eminently qualified having studied with local reiki master Victoria Gosher. Dot has a very warm but practical approach to her work. She has an intuitive understanding of the human condition in all it’s variation – but is also very grounded and able to provide practical advice and explanations.

Results and experience

After the session I always feel ridiculously relaxed and I always sleep well, even if the appointment has been in the morning. When I relax, this can also mean emotions and feelings come up that I may not have realised were present, and I have often had a good cry afterwards. Dot will also report back what she noticed about your energy in the body and whether she noticed any blockages – as well as what this might mean in everyday terms. She usually pin points something I knew about, but was trying to avoid recognising!
